Last month was Adoption Awareness month and November 3rd was Orphan Sunday (has it really already been a month ago?!). We are blessed to be a part of a church that was open to doing something for this.
I put together a PowerPoint presentation with orphan statistics set to "Keep Changing the World" by MIKESCHAIR (if anyone would like a copy, just let me know and I'd be happy to get it to you!). They played this right before the sermon. Then our pastor preached a great message, tying adoption of children to our adoption into God's family once we are saved. I'll share a few of his points/thoughts:
"Adoption is:
• Costly
• Legal
• Blessing of family
- John 14:26
• Submitting to a new authority
• Heirs to the Father
- Heb 1:2
- Rom 8:32
- Rom 8:16 & 17
- Means we suffer with Christ b/c we
are heirs with Christ
- Rom 8:22 & 23 - "we are waiting to
be picked up"
Jesus embraced people who were worthless - the children in the Roman culture had no value as kids, only when they got older did they have anything to offer to the family. So when Jesus said "allow them to come to Me", He was turning the culture on its head."
We were so blessed to be a part of this service this year. It was a great sermon with lots of great points, and although they weren't quite what we were expecting, they were very good and our pastor did a great job tying physical adoption together to our spiritual adoption.
I hope your church was able to do something for Orphan Sunday or something during Adoption Awareness Month. If not, begin praying now about how to get involved and start talking to your pastor(s) now!
